Thought it would be cool to test the the wordpress plugin TwitterTools. Twitter Tools is a plugin that integrates your wordpress blog and your Twitter account. Version 1.51a, just released today, is compatible with my current version of wordpress and includes the following functionality:

* Archive your Twitter tweets (downloaded every 15 minutes)

* Create a blog post from each of your tweets

* Create a daily digest post of your tweets

* Create a tweet on Twitter whenever you post in your blog, with a link to the blog post

* Post a tweet from your sidebar

* Post a tweet from the WP Admin screens

* Pass your tweets along to another service (via API hook)

So naturally I figured it was a great move to add the plugin. Afterall, I have a new post (not this one) that I want to autotweet. And that was the primary reason for installing this plugin. I wanted a simple and automated way of letting my tweeples in the twitterverse know that I posted something new.

Simple? No.

After installing, I tested my Twitter.com login within the Twitter Tools plugin. Oops, got an error message. After reconfirming my login credentials 5 times (as if the second time wasn’t proof enough), I decided to ignore the message and test other capabilities. I know that makes absolutely no sense. Afterall, how could the tool access my tweets from Twitter.com when the login failed?

10 minutes on the Wordpress Forum and the Twitter wiki proved fruitless. So I proceeded with my irrational decision to test widget capability.

Eureka!

I placed the Twitter Tools widget on the side bar and there were my current tweets! Hmm, not sure why that worked…

Perhaps the plugin will actually create a new tweet of a new blog post despite the error message? That’s why I downloaded this tool in the first place…

So here I am ready to test this functionally. I was going to just post “Test” to my blog and see what happens. Instead, I decided to capture the experience as part of the process. Thanks for humoring me. Time for the experiment.

Let’s see what happens next.

What’s the best predictor of how far you’re going to go and the level of your success?

Education? Intelligence? Talent? Luck? It’s none of these. These items determine your potential. And you’ve got great potential!

So why aren’t you experiencing the success you deserve?

What determines how far you’ll go in your business is what constrains you. It’s what holds you back that best predicts how far you’ll go!

So if you grasp this concept that it’s not your potential, it’s what holds you back that limits your success…

The next logical question is: What’s holding you back? And what’s that tipping point, if you were to isolate it and then work through it?.

In a 120-minute call, Rich Schefren, CEO of Strategic Profits, and publisher of the Internet Business Manifesto, interviewed his multi-millionaire clients. You can get the full story at the Strategic Profits blog and the impact it made when you read the listeners’ comments.

Each shared their biggest constraint and how they worked through it. Consequently, their business grew exponentially (they share the magnitude of these changes on the call), had more free time and more fun (i.e. less stress and struggle).

If you missed the original call plus 2 replays on Mon and Tues (Rich had 3,000 lines), you can listen to the call online. You’ll learn firsthand the specific constraints these Internet multi-millionaires experienced and how they overcame them.

And while you’re at it, be sure to download your complimentary copy of the Internet Business Manifesto. It’s well worth the read if you plan to leverage the Internet channel to build your business.

You’ve decided to use the business networking site, LinkedIn.com as a tool to follow up with potential clients, build relationships and cull business opportunities. Yet, you don’t understand why more people don’t click “accept” when they initially receive your LinkedIn invitation.

And it’s all because you sent this:

“So what’s wrong with this invitation,” you ask? “It’s the one pre-populated by LinkedIn, so it ought to be good enough”, you figure.

Well, the truth is that it’s not good enough for following up and building business relationships. Sending a generic invitation like the one above, causes your invitations to be deleted, ignored, or worse, completely rejected.

It’s a sure-fire way to turn off those who receive your well-intended invitation, reduce the number of “accepted” invites, and stunt your relationship-building activities.

4 Reasons Why Your LinkedIn Invitations Are NOT “Accepted” (and What to Do Differently):

1.	They don’t know you.

Literally. Your interaction at a recent business conference or networking event was one of many they had. When they receive your LinkedIn invitation ‘as is,’ the first question they ask themselves is “How do I know this person?” Don’t assume that you made a favorable impression and ‘expect’ them to remember you by name. So in your opening sentence, refresh their memory about who you are and the memorable encounter you both shared.

2.	They haven’t heard from you in ages.

Remember the good ol’ days from college, B-school or Company X? Well, you may. But your recipients may not. If it’s been ages since you spoke or exchanged an email (let alone a holiday card), reconnect first. In your opening sentence, admit to the lapse in contact. Then share a short personal update, followed by an invitation to keep in touch. For example, “Hi Lynn it’s been ages since we last exchanged emails. How have you been? Saw you on LinkedIn and thought I’d try reconnecting….” You’ll win more “accepts” from this approach versus the generic invite.

3.	You haven’t personalized the note.

The system pre-populates the recipient’s first name but that alone doesn’t make the note personal. The sterile tone of your invitation provides no incentive to know, like or trust you. How you invite people to your network says a lot about how you value the relationship, and how likely they’ll assist you when you need to tap into their relationships with others. It’s a fact. We choose to help those we trust and those we like because we know them. Express a sincere interest in the recipient’s well-being or current business challenge.

4.	You haven’t given them a compelling reason why they should “link” to you.

Your generic invitation feels more like an ulterior motive to access the golden eggs (their precious contacts) without taking care of the goose (cultivating a relationship with them). Because they do not know you to like or trust you, any request for assistance down the road, wouldn’t yield the results you’d expect. There’s no incentive to happily forward leads and broker introductions on your behalf. And the manner in which you invite them doesn’t engender trust or better treatment once they join your network. Instead, create value by explicitly offering “access” to your network. Suggest they join your network to find someone who can help them solve a specific problem and as the ‘goose’ or connection, you’ll broker an introduction.

Bottom line?

If you want to build a highly responsive network of contacts using LinkedIn.com, then stop sending out LinkedIn invitations the wrong way. Instead, take 90 seconds to craft a short and personal invitation that reconnects and incentivizes your recipients to join your network. An “inviting” invitation leads to more clicks of the “accept” button and continues to move the relationship forward.

Start implementing these suggestions now and see how quickly people respond favorably to your invitation.

You’ve done it. I’ve done it. It’s been done to us.

It’s the first line of an email or phone conversation.

“Hi, Marian. I’m following up to see if you…”
“Marian, Just following up to see if you decided…”
“Marian, We agreed that we’d follow up on Tuesday…”

In business, the words ‘follow up’ have become devoid of meaning. And that’s not necessarily a good thing.

Think about it.

On the receiving end, the other person perceives your communication as sterile, boring, and mechanical — something you’re doing to check off your To-Do List.

It’s no wonder the receiver is unmotivated to take action to help you move YOUR agenda forward. You haven’t given her that spark to spur her to action. Besides, if she’s been overloaded with email and phone calls (which is how most people feel), she’s not looking for yet another ‘to-do’ to add to HER task list.

So what are you really trying to accomplish?

Let’s reflect on that for a moment.

You met someone who could help you make inroads into an organization you have an interest. Or you met someone who may have expressed a need for a service you have to offer (including if the product is Y-O-U)

After a meaningful interaction, the last thing you want to do is to turn them off. So why not help them remember that positive, initial connection?

“Hi Marian. I’m reconnecting on the ideas you highlighted…”
“Marian, I want to continue our conversation on the specific challenges…”
“Marian, I want to explore whether there is an opportunity….”

The point is to use words that convey sincerity and signal an interest to move the conversation forward and eventually build a relationship.

Although you’re engaged in a “follow up” activity, there’s no need to turn someone off by using those exact words.

When people perceive you are sincere, they are more inclined to open their rolodex or pull out their credit card.

Otherwise, you’re just following up. And how has that worked for you thus far?
